    Responsibilities

    The Vertex Companies, Inc. is looking for a Forensic Structural Engineer to join our team in Aston, PA or Columbia, MD. This position is for a Licensed Professional Engineer (civil or structural), responsible for overseeing a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to field inspections and written reports for residential and commercial property damage claims and forensic investigations involving construction defect claims. More specific details are described below.

     

    Provide investigation and review for multiple projects; provide detailed investigative reports and findings to senior management and clients, primarily law firms and insurance companies. Client satisfaction is essential.

     

    Core Responsibilities

    • Be familiar with applicable company policies and procedures (including technical and safety training requirements);
    • Have full understanding of engineering state board requirements for applicable state(s);
    • Developing proposed budgets for PM’s / Account Manager’s review;
    • Understand / work within project budgets (manage staff to do the same as appropriate);
    • Understand / work within project deadlines (manage staff to do the same as appropriate);
    • Participate in business development by documenting new clients (or client reps) and communicating with BD staff as directed;
    • Work primarily with both personal and commercial line property claims;
    • Review incoming assignments to develop protocol for site inspection.  Work with APM as required/appropriate for this function;
    • Review site information (photos) to from APM in the field to confirm protocols;
    • Develop report narrative with appropriate photos and applicable documents. Review of site photos and documents with APM to develop report narrative as appropriate;
    • Develop CAD sketch(s) as required for deliverables;
    • Research of code and industry specifications related to assignment (Manage staff to do same as appropriate / review APM work product);
    • Review APM report narrative as appropriate;
    • Develop area of study (proficiency) by attending advanced training and present topic(s) to forensic team; and
    • Assignments include liability claims and litigation matters;
    • Advanced building envelope training and certification; and
    • Participate in business development ventures and industry sponsored presentations; and
    • Utilization Goal (75%)

    Position Requirements

    • Proficient with building envelope requirements for commercial and residential building structures
    • Previous experience in the design of residential structures or experience with residential property damage claim investigations
    • Previous experience in supporting litigation matters
    • Able to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with co-workers, clients and subcontractors

    Qualifications

     

    Education

    • Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering (with emphasis in structures)
    • Advanced degree not required but beneficial

    Experience

    • Prefer a minimum of ten years experience in design and construction related activities of residential and commercial structures or design and inspection of residential and commercial structures

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Strong knowledge of the residential (IRC), commercial (IBC) and existing (IEBC) I-codes
    • Understanding of residential wood framing
    • Understanding of building envelope requirements
    • Must be able to perform complex tasks and handle multiple priorities, and have the ability to perform exceptionally under high stress conditions. Knowledge of computer operations and standard software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, Adobe) required. MathCAD not required but beneficial.  
    • Professional Registration (PE in PA, MD, or ability to obtain within 6 months) required

    Physical Requirement

    • Able to carry and operate a 24-foot extension ladder unassisted
    • Able to walk on sloped roofs
    • Able to work in small spaces (attics, crawl spaces)
