    Industrial Hygiene & Building Sciences / Waterborne Pathogen Services Field Engineer

    The Vertex Companies, Inc. (VERTEX) is looking for an individual to join our Industrial Hygiene and Waterborne Pathogen team in our Long Island City, NY office.  VERTEX is a rapidly growing, multi-national consulting firm that is experiencing exponential growth, and we’re looking to augment our team of talented individuals. The individual we are looking for will enjoy the challenge of working on multiple projects on a fast-paced schedule, working with senior staff, and providing field oversight on a variety of projects. More specific details are described below.


    Core Responsibilities

    (Adequate training will be provided)

    • Development of cooling tower water management programs and plans (MPPs) and potable water sampling and management plans (SMPs) that are consistent with the rules and regulations of New York State (NYS) and with the applicable provisions of ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015, Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems (ASHRAE 188).
    • Performance of onsite implementation-support services in connection with Clients’ MPPs and SMPs. These services include, but are not limited to review and maintenance of Client records for the cooling tower and potable water system (Systems), inspection & evaluation of Cooling Tower and Potable Water Systems, making parametric (physics-chemical) measurements and collection of environmental water samples, and coordination of audits, inspections and surveys.
    • Schedule and coordinate subcontractor activities for projects (if required).
    • Support other VERTEX service areas as necessary.
    • Executing assignments with technical proficiency, accuracy, consistency and professionalism.

     Position Requirements

    • Familiarity with, at a minimum, Standard NSF 453: Cooling Towers – Treatment, Operation, and Maintenance to Prevent Legionellosis; ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2015, Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems; New York State and New York  City rules and regulations with regard to protection of Legionella in cooling tower and potable water systems.
    • Frequent travel and/or field work (valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required).
    • Ability to work with minimal oversight, but to take direction from managers.
    • Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) with co-workers, clients and subcontractors.
    • Ability to meet deadlines, both internally and externally.
    • Willingness to seek opportunities to expand client services with existing and new clients as part of ongoing business development.
    • Make employee safety a priority both in-house and on-site, in accordance with corporate policy.




    • Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent experience.


    •  Minimum of 0-2 years’ experience in technical activities with specific engineering, biology and/or chemistry course work, knowledge of chemical disinfectants, and strong report writing.


    Knowledge & Skills

    • Must be able to perform complex tasks and handle multiple priorities, and have the ability to perform exceptionally under high stress conditions.
    • Knowledge of computer operations and standard software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, Adobe) required.
    • Proficiency or working knowledge of CAD a plus.


    • Position requires Health & Safety Certification pursuant to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120.
    • (HAZWOPER 40 Hour) – training provided if required.
    • OSHA 10 or 30-Hour training provided if required.

    Physical Requirements

    •  Walk job sites during inspections, sometimes on uneven terrain.
    • Carry field testing equipment (up to 30 pounds) onto job sites with regularity.
